Study plan
How to Pass the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals Exam
A study plan for the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals certification exam, built from the official domain weights instead of a generic template. Use Microsoft Learn free training modules (AZ-900 learning path). Supplement with hands-on Azure free account to explore services in the portal. Focus on understanding cloud models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS), core services, and governance tools. Review case studies and practice tests to reinforce scenario-based questions.

Study in weight order, not topic order
The plan below follows the official blueprint weights, so the order of study is the order that returns the most points.
- 1
Describe Azure architecture and services
39%- Describe the core architectural components of Azure (e.g., regions, availability zones, resource groups, Azure Resource Manager)
- Describe core compute services (e.g., Azure Virtual Machines, Azure App Service, Azure Functions, Azure Container Instances)
- Describe core networking services (e.g., Azure Virtual Network, Azure Load Balancer, Azure VPN Gateway, Azure DNS)
- Describe core storage services (e.g., Azure Blob Storage, Azure Disk Storage, Azure Files, Azure Storage tiers)
- +2 more topics in the blueprint
18 practice questions tagged to this domain.
- 2
Describe Azure management and governance
33%- Describe cost management in Azure (e.g., Total Cost of Ownership calculator, Azure Cost Management, cost factors and pricing models)
- Describe features and tools for governance and compliance (e.g., Azure Policy, Azure Blueprints, Microsoft Purview, Azure compliance offerings)
- Describe management and monitoring tools (e.g., Azure Portal, Azure CLI, Azure PowerShell, Azure Monitor, Azure Service Health)
- Describe Azure subscriptions and management groups
- +1 more topics in the blueprint
19 practice questions tagged to this domain.
- 3
Describe cloud concepts
28%- Identify the benefits and considerations of using cloud services (e.g., high availability, scalability, security, governance)
- Describe the differences between Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS), Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)
- Describe the differences between public, private, and hybrid cloud models
- Understand the consumption-based model and its implications on cost and operations
13 practice questions tagged to this domain.
Three phases, in order
Most failures are process failures, not knowledge failures.
Phase 1 — Learn the high-weight domains
Start where the points are. The first domains on this plan carry the most weight, so a gap there costs the most. Cover the objectives, then close each topic with practice questions you actually get wrong.
Phase 2 — Close the mid-weight domains
The middle of the blueprint is where most candidates plateau. These domains are worth less per topic than the first phase, but they add up fast, and they are the usual difference between a near miss and a clear pass.
Phase 3 — Timed full mocks
Stop reading new material at this point. Run full-length exams under the real time limit and the real format, and use the per-domain breakdown to find which domain is still costing you the pass.
Where we put the emphasis
Certilum recommends emphasizing the practical understanding of cloud benefits, Azure architecture components, and service categories. Candidates should be able to compare and contrast different deployment models and understand the role of governance and cost management tools.
The order matters less than the loop. Every domain you finish should end with questions you got wrong, because the mistake is the only thing you actually needed to study. On the Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals that loop is worth 28% of the exam in the first block alone.
