Study plan
How to Pass the Azure Solutions Architect Expert Exam
A study plan for the Azure Solutions Architect Expert certification exam, built from the official domain weights instead of a generic template. Combine official Microsoft Learn modules, hands-on labs, and architectural design practice. Review Azure well-architected framework pillars. Focus on scenario-based decision making, not just product features. Use practice exams to identify weak areas. Spend 3-4 weeks with consistent study.

Study in weight order, not topic order
The plan below follows the official blueprint weights, so the order of study is the order that returns the most points.
- 1
Design infrastructure solutions
32%- Design compute solutions using virtual machines, virtual machine scale sets, Azure App Service, Azure Container Instances, and Azure Kubernetes Service
- Design networking solutions including virtual networks, network security groups, Azure Load Balancer, Application Gateway, Azure Firewall, and Azure DNS
- Design application architecture with microservices, messaging, events, and API Management
- Design migrations from on-premises workloads to Azure using Azure Migrate and best practices
19 practice questions tagged to this domain.
- 2
Design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions
28%- Design identity, authorization, and access solutions by using Microsoft Entra ID, conditional access policies, and Privileged Identity Management
- Design governance solutions such as Azure Policy, Azure RBAC, and management groups
- Design monitoring solutions using Azure Monitor, Log Analytics, Azure Application Insights, and alerting strategies
17 practice questions tagged to this domain.
- 3
Design data storage solutions
22%- Design a data storage solution using Azure Storage accounts, Azure , Azure Cosmos DB, and data lake patterns
- Design data integration solutions with Azure Data Factory, Azure Databricks, and event-based ingestion
- Select appropriate data architecture for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data
13 practice questions tagged to this domain.
- 4
Design business continuity solutions
18%- Design backup and recovery solutions using Azure Backup, Azure Site Recovery, and geo-redundant storage
- Design high availability solutions with availability zones, virtual machine scale sets, and Azure App Service deployment slots
- Design failover and disaster recovery strategies to meet RTO and RPO objectives

Three phases, in order
Most failures are process failures, not knowledge failures.
Phase 1 — Learn the high-weight domains
Start where the points are. The first domains on this plan carry the most weight, so a gap there costs the most. Cover the objectives, then close each topic with practice questions you actually get wrong.
Phase 2 — Close the mid-weight domains
The middle of the blueprint is where most candidates plateau. These domains are worth less per topic than the first phase, but they add up fast, and they are the usual difference between a near miss and a clear pass.
Phase 3 — Timed full mocks
Stop reading new material at this point. Run full-length exams under the real time limit and the real format, and use the per-domain breakdown to find which domain is still costing you the pass.
Where we put the emphasis
Certilum recommends deep dives into each domain weight, prioritizing infrastructure and identity topics. Build small proof-of-concept solutions to reinforce core services. Master Azure Policy, Entra ID, storage redundancy, and network architecture.
The order matters less than the loop. Every domain you finish should end with questions you got wrong, because the mistake is the only thing you actually needed to study. On the Azure Solutions Architect Expert that loop is worth 22% of the exam in the first block alone.
