Online vs Test Center: Which Exam Format Should You Pick? (The Rules Differ by Vendor)

Table of Contents
Executive Summary
There is no universal answer, because the vendors genuinely differ. The exam formats referenced throughout are in the full certification index, and the time limits come from each practice diagnostic you can run before you commit to a date. CompTIA and PMI both offer a live remote-proctored option through Pearson VUE's OnVUE. ISC2 does not — every ISC2 exam, including the CISSP, is delivered in a Pearson testing center. And the practical cost of the online option is not the price, which does not change; it is the environment you have to clear before you start.
- Available online: CompTIA, PMI.
- Test center only: ISC2 (CISSP, CCSP, SSCP, CISA... — all of them).
- OnVUE requirements: one screen, no second monitor, no VPN, no headphones, 6 Mbps down / 2 Mbps up, an empty desk, and you must be alone in the room for the whole session.
- Price: the same either way. The fee is set by the certification, not by the delivery mode.
The exam you register for and the room you sit in are two different decisions, and the second one is where remote proctoring actually bites. The rules are not uniform across vendors, which is why "can I take it online?" has a different answer depending on who issues the certificate.
Who actually offers an online exam
Pearson VUE publishes the list of exam programmes that allow testing from home, and it is a short list. Two of the big names are on it:
- CompTIA — Pearson VUE runs a dedicated OnVUE landing for CompTIA exams.
- PMI — the PMP can be taken in a test center or online with a proctor, which the PMP Examination Content Outline states explicitly.
ISC2 is not on that list, and ISC2 is unambiguous about it: "All ISC2 exams are offered at Pearson testing centers worldwide." The CISSP page is even more specific — exams are available "exclusively through Pearson Professional Centers (PPCs) and ISC2-authorized Pearson Select Test Centers (PVTC Selects)." If you are sitting a CISSP, a CCSP or an SSCP, the online option does not exist.
Two geographic restrictions are worth knowing before you plan around online testing. PMI's online proctored option is not available to citizens of mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong. CompTIA states that OnVUE exams are not available to candidates from Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Sudan, Syria, Russia, Belarus and certain Ukrainian territories.
What OnVUE asks of your room
This is the part that decides it for a lot of people. Pearson VUE's requirements are specific and unforgiving, and failing a check-in means losing the fee.
| Requirement | What it means in practice |
|---|---|
| One display only | Multi-monitor setups are not permitted. If you work on a laptop with an external screen, you disconnect it. |
| No network games | Corporate networks, VPNs and public or shared networks are prohibited. You need a private connection. |
| No headphones | No headsets, no earbuds, no watches, no phones or tablets in the room. |
| Empty desk | Only the computer, pre-approved items and an unmarked drink. Nothing else. |
| Connection | At least 6 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up, and the session is recorded. |
| Alone | You must remain alone at all times, and nobody may view your screen even from a distance. |
| Check-in | Start 30 minutes early, complete a 360° room scan, and present government-issued ID matching the name on the booking. |
Failure to satisfy these on exam day "can result in immediate exam cancellation and forfeiture of your exam fee." That is the real risk of the online option: not the technology, the checklist.
Does the format change how long you get?
For the same exam, generally no — and the time limits are worth knowing because they drive your pacing.
- CISSP — test center only. 3 hours, 100 to 150 items including 25 unscored pretest items. ISC2 does not limit breaks, but your total exam time includes them.
- CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) — center or OnVUE. 90 minutes, maximum 90 questions, no scheduled breaks in either modality.
- PMP — center or online. 240 minutes for 180 questions, with two 10-minute breaks. The current Examination Content Outline gives 240 minutes for the center-based exam and does not publish a separate online duration.
What it costs to change your mind
Rescheduling and cancellation policies are set per programme, and they are not generous.
| Vendor | Reschedule | Cancel | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| PMI | Free up to 48 h before | Free up to 48 h before | Within 30 days of the exam: $70 fee. Up to 3 attempts within a 12-month eligibility period. |
| ISC2 | $50, at least 24 h before | $100, at least 24 h before | No refund if you do not sit the exam within 365 days. Retest after 30 test-free days; 4 attempts per 12 months. |
| CompTIA | Free up to 24 h before at a center | Fee forfeited under 24 h | Online: reschedule up to the start time. No waiting period before attempt 2; 14 days before attempt 3. |
On price itself, no vendor publishes a different fee for the online mode. PMI charges a certification fee that varies by membership status and region, and it applies to both modalities. CompTIA charges a voucher and publishes no OnVUE surcharge. ISC2 has no online option to price.
Is the online exam cheaper than the test center?
No — the price is set by the certification, not by the delivery mode. The online option saves travel and time, and costs you a room that passes the OnVUE checklist. Some people are better served by paying for a test center than by clearing a desk, unplugging a second monitor and being alone in a room for three hours.
Can I take the CISSP online?
No. ISC2 exams are delivered exclusively at Pearson Professional Centers and ISC2-authorized Select Test Centers. The CISSP is a 3-hour, 100-to-150-item exam with a computer-adaptive format, and it happens in a testing center.
What happens if my connection drops during an online exam?
The session is recorded and proctored, and Pearson VUE's technical requirements specify that the ports used for the session must stay connected. If the environment check fails, the exam can be cancelled with the fee forfeited — which is why the connection requirement is a floor, not a suggestion. If you are on a corporate network or a VPN, the exam will not start.
Can I change from online to test center after booking?
For PMI, yes: the Certification Handbook describes cancelling the current appointment online and booking the other delivery type, with the reprogramming fee applying if you are inside 30 days. Budget for the change rather than deciding on exam day.
