AWS Solutions Architect Associate vs Professional: Which One Should You Take?

Table of Contents
Executive Summary
The Associate (SAA-C03) costs USD 150 and the Professional (SAP-C02) costs USD 300. But the Professional is not "twice the exam" — it is a different category of exam. The Associate tests breadth across services. The Professional tests multi-constraint trade-off reasoning, which is why its pass rate is widely reported as far lower among candidates who take it straight after the Associate.
- Associate: 65 questions, 130 minutes, multiple choice and multiple response.
- Professional: 65 questions, 150 minutes, multiple choice and multiple response, with a prerequisite of the Associate or two years of relevant experience.
- Decision rule: if you design cloud architectures for a living and are being paid for the decisions, go Professional. If you are building the foundation or working in a non-architecture role, Associate first.
Almost everyone who asks this question is really asking whether the Professional exam will pay for itself. The answer depends less on the exam than on your job: if you are the person in the room defending the architecture decision, the Professional is worth double. If you are not, it is worth half.
Format comparison
| Associate (SAA-C03) | Professional (SAP-C02) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | USD 150 | USD 300 |
| Questions | 65 | 65 |
| Time | 130 minutes | 150 minutes |
| Question types | Multiple choice and multiple response | Multiple choice and multiple response |
| Prerequisite | None | Associate, or 2 years of relevant AWS experience |
| Passing score | 720 / 1,000 | 750 / 1,000 |
Same question count, twenty more minutes, and a higher bar. The Professional is not longer because there is more to know — it is longer because the trade-offs take longer to reason through.
What the exams actually ask
Associate: do you know the service?
The SAA-C03 blueprint is spread across design for resilience, high availability, storage, compute, database, networking, security, monitoring and cost optimisation. Questions are typically single-decision: given this requirement, which service or configuration satisfies it? The traps are about distinguishing between two services that sound similar — EBS versus instance store, or a NAT gateway versus an internet gateway.
Professional: can you defend the trade-off?
The SAP-C02 blueprint is organised around the same technical areas but every question is multi-constraint. You are given a scenario with cost, availability, latency, compliance and operational overhead all pulling in different directions, and you must pick the option that satisfies the stated requirements. The wrong answers are usually the ones that optimise one dimension brilliantly while breaking another.
That is why professionals describe it as feeling like a different exam. You are not being asked whether you know AWS. You are being asked whether you can reason about AWS the way an architect is paid to.
Which one should you take?
Take the Professional first if
- You design cloud architectures and are accountable for the cost and availability trade-offs being made.
- You are already preparing for a senior or staff engineer, principal architect, or cloud architect role where a solutions architect credential is expected.
- You have already passed the Associate or you genuinely have two years of hands-on AWS architecture work.
- Your employer is funding it, or it is clearly on your promotion path.
Take the Associate first if
- You are building the foundation and the Professional blueprint assumes concepts the Associate teaches.
- Your role is operations, development or security rather than architecture.
- You want a credential that clears a resume filter at the lowest possible cost. At USD 150, the Associate does that job well.
- You are not sure yet whether you want to go down the architecture path.
Take neither yet if
You have no hands-on AWS time. Both exams assume you have operated the platform. Certilum's practice exams simulate the question format, but they cannot substitute for the experience the blueprint assumes — and for the Professional, that gap shows up immediately.
How to prepare, whichever you choose
Work through the blueprint by domain, then use timed practice. For the Associate the trap is breadth across services; for the Professional it is reasoning under a time limit with several competing constraints. The AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Associate and AWS Certified Solutions Architect – Professional pages on Certilum have the full blueprints, and the Associate question bank is the fastest way to find out whether your gaps are services or judgement.
Do I need the Associate before the Professional?
You need one of two things: the Associate certification, or two years of relevant AWS experience. The exam does not check which one you used. Passing the Associate first still helps, because it covers the service breadth the Professional assumes.
Which AWS solutions architect exam is harder?
The Professional, clearly. It has the same question count, twenty more minutes, a higher passing score, and a reasoning load that is categorically different. It is the reason most candidates who skip straight to the Professional end up retaking the Associate first.
How much do the AWS solutions architect exams cost?
USD 150 for the Associate and USD 300 for the Professional, both at US list price. Retakes are charged at the same rate, so budget for a second attempt rather than treating the first as a one-shot.
Is the AWS Solutions Architect Associate still worth it in 2026?
Yes, more than the Professional in one sense: it is the cheapest credible AWS credential at USD 150, it has no prerequisites, and it clears the resume filter for a wide range of cloud roles. For most people it is the highest return per dollar of any AWS exam.
Which certification pays more, the Associate or the Professional?
Neither pays on its own — certifications do not set salaries, roles do. What the Professional does is remove a screening objection for roles that explicitly ask for it. If your target job postings already list one of these, take the one they list.
